2016 Hyundai Azera

New for 2016

For 2016, the Azera Limited gains adaptive cruise control with stop-start technology and a nifty electronic parking brake with automatic vehicle hold function that lets drivers remove their foot from the brake while stopped.

Wide Awake

It used to be that full-size sedans were as stimulating to the senses as sedative. Thankfully, those boring days are over. The 2016 Hyundai Azera is here to give the sleepy segment a much-needed jolt, and embark on a new and exciting era of full-size fun.

The Azera distinguishes itself by virtue of its sharply defined exterior. But it’s so much more than shiny sheet metal. Equally impressive is its interior, where Hyundai packed in every standard feature you’d expect to find (and more), along with premium offerings like a blind-spot warning system and rear cross-traffic alert.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the 2016 Hyundai Azera makes sure every drive is done in comfort and with confidence. That’s because it’s powered by an enthusiastic 3.3-liter V6 engine that produces 293 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque.

With nearly 300 hp on tap, the Azera offers plenty of punch. Tap the gas and engine comes alive. That engine is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission that is eager to please, providing quick and smooth shifts when called into action. All Azera models are front-wheel drive—a common configuration among its class.

Of course, the Azera is tuned to deliver a smooth and pleasant ride, and while it’s not intended to hustle around corners, it won’t shy away from them, either. Indeed, drivers will find it handles well, with excellent feedback and ride comfort in the city and on the highway.

Speaking of city and highway, the Azera is remarkably efficient. Despite its potent V6, EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 mpg in combined driving (20 city/29 highway) for the base Azera. *

Features

Stuff—the 2016 Azera has a lot of it. And with a starting price of $34,100, ** that bodes well for customers that appreciate the finer things in life, but that would just as much like to keep their bank account full.

Even in its base guise, the 2016 Azera boasts an impressive array of standard features. Highlights include 18-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, and because Hyundai cares about happy relationships, the Azera also comes with standard dual-zone automatic climate control. Never argue about temperature again!

We’re far from done, though. The Azera (remember we’re still talking about the “base model”) also comes with a number of safety features, like a blind-spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert; two safety features often seen in more expensive models or locked behind high-priced packages.

When it comes to technology, the Azera has you covered. There’s Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity for easy hands-free talking and music-streaming, as well a smart 8-inch touchscreen that incorporates both navigation and smartphone apps (including Pandora® and Siri Eyes Free).

Rounding out the Azera’s tech features is a rearview camera, a 14-speaker Infinity audio system, and Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system.

Stepping up to the Azera Limited will net you even more goodies, (if you can believe it). It adds 19-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control (new for 2016), and other premium features like automatic high-beam control, LED foglights, and a panoramic sunroof.

The Azera Limited also adds to the base model’s safety features with lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems and rear parking sensors, all of which allow you to drive with even more peace of mind.

Design

Full-size sedans aren’t renowned for their styling, but then we’ve already established that the 2016 Hyundai Azera marches to the beat of its own drum.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Azera is its careful attention to detail, especially around the front, where Hyundai designers made sure that the grille, headlights, and lower vents all fit together nicely. Another coordination of lines and surfaces can be seen at the rear, where the taillights and trunk lid meet. It’s all very pleasing to the eyes and a true representation of Hyundai’s passion for design.

The Azera’s interior is artfully penned but doesn’t get bogged down with pretentious flourishes. Instead, form and function exist in harmony. Sweeping shapes are tempered with intelligent placement and easy-to-use instrumentation.

Material quality is also excellent. Leather upholstery is standard, and the Azera’s 12-way power driver seat (with lumbar adjustment and seat-bottom extension) and 8-way power front passenger seat make getting comfortable a breeze. The Azera also comes with standard heated and ventilated front seats, as well as heated rear seats.

With 16.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity, the Azera is all well-equipped to stow what you need to, when you need to.

Safety

Style, size, and…safety. The 2016 Hyundai Azera offers a trifecta of convenience and quality. Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front- and rear-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, a driver-side knee airbag, and active front head restraints.

All Azera models come with a rearview camera and a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alerts. As mentioned, the Azera Limited adds lane-departure and frontal-collision warning systems and rear parking sensors.

Finally, Hyundai's Blue Link system provides services such as remote access, emergency assistance, theft recovery, and teen-driver-oriented features, such as curfew alert, speed alert and geo-fencing that provides notification when the vehicle travels outside a predetermined area.

Verdict

Never mind the full-size sedan segment, the 2016 Hyundai Azera is one of the most handsomely styled vehicles around. But it’s more than good looks, the Azera boasts premium features and performance—all at a price that won’t break the bank.
