2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport

New for 2017

The Elantra Sport is a new model for 2017.

Competent Compact Performer Branches Out

For years, the Hyundai Elantra has been one of the most competent compact sedans, offering great value in a practical, well-engineered package. But while the Elantra is certainly sensible, it's never attempted to be a serious competitor in the sport sedan category. For 2017, Hyundai hopes to change that with the new Elantra Sport, which adds speed and nimble handling to the Elantra’s resumé.

Performance

As the name implies, the Elantra Sport is all about sporty, engaging driving. Based on the solid foundation of the current-generation Elantra, it offers a little something extra for driving enthusiasts.

It all starts with the engine. The Elantra Sport is powered by Hyundai’s Gamma 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, tuned to produce 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. That’s 54 hp and 63 lb-ft more than the standard Elantra. That power is sent to the front wheels through a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. EPA-rated fuel economy is 25 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway) with the manual transmission, and 29 mpg combined (26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway) with the automatic.*

The combination of just over 200 hp and a manual transmission is sure to get enthusiasts’ attention, but that’s not all there is to the 2017 Elantra Sport. Hyundai also upgraded its suspension with larger front and rear stabilizer bars, and higher spring and damper rates. The rear suspension also features a multi-link design unique to the Sport. Rounding out the list of changes are larger front brake rotors and retuned steering and final drive ratios.

The Sport model builds on the already solid foundation of the 2017 Elantra. The current-generation Elantra features a chassis made from 51 percent high-strength steel (up from 21 percent in the previous version). The Elantra Sport features an additional 394 feet of structural adhesive to increase chassis rigidity. Hyundai engineers also tweaked the intake and exhaust systems for a better sound.

Features

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport is a four-door, five-seat compact sedan. It’s one of five models in the 2017 Elantra lineup and is positioned near the top of that lineup in terms of equipment and price. The base price for the Elantra Sport is $21,650.**

Standard equipment includes a hands-free trunk, power-folding heated exterior mirrors, LED daytime running lights and taillights, HID headlights, leather upholstery, heated front sport seats, 60/40 split-folding rear seatback, tilt-and-telescopic steering column, Bluetooth®, dual USB ports, display audio system with 7.0-inch touchscreen, and a 3.5-inch TFT instrument cluster display.

In addition to the standard equipment, an available Premium Package includes more convenience features. The package adds a navigation system with 8.0-inch touchscreen, Infinity eight-speaker premium audio system, sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink and compass.

Design

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport is distinguished from other Elantra models by special styling elements inside and out. The Elantra Sport features a distinctive look that still allows its driver to fly under the radar.

Exterior styling changes include model-specific front and rear fasciae, side-sill extensions, model-specific lighting signature for the LED taillights, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The front fascia incorporates a black grille with subtle “Turbo” badging, while the rear end includes dual tailpipes.

On the inside, the Elantra Sport features heated leather sport seats with red contrast stitching and robust side bolstering—the better to hold occupants in place during hard cornering. The red contrast stitching carries over to the shifter and steering wheel, which is itself a sporty flat-bottom affair. Rounding out the changes are alloy pedals and a Sport-specific instrument cluster.

Of course, the Sport model is still an Elantra, which makes it a very practical package as well. The Elantra Sport boasts 95.8 cubic feet of passenger volume as well as 14.4 cubic feet of cargo space. A 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat provides the flexibility to carry longer items.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, rearview camera, and a full array of airbags. Optional features include blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert and lane change assist, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and high beam assist.

Verdict

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport is a solid first attempt at a sporty compact sedan.
