2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

New for 2015

The Genesis Coupe now offers a single powertrain option, the 3.8-liter V6, and comes standard with LED running lights. The R-Spec trim gains standard keyless entry/ignition and automatic climate control.

The Rear-Wheel Drive Sports Coupe That’s Backed by Hyundai Value

The Genesis Coupe is Hyundai’s ode to the fondly remembered sports coupes of yore, foregoing the heights of modern convenience to focus squarely on driving thrills. It’s the sort of vehicle that caters to drivers who know what they want—and who also have an eye for a good deal thanks to the surprising MSRP and the exceptional Hyundai Assurance 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. This year, Hyundai’s upped the value even further with a few nods to the latest technology, without sacrificing any of the appeal that’s made it a performance favorite in its own right.

Powertrains and Performance

Hyundai dropped the previous model’s four-cylinder option, making the standard 3.8-liter V6 the sole option under the hood. Fine by us, as this responsive powertrain delivers a more-than-adequate 348 horsepower1 and 295 pound-feet of torque. Hyundai’s paired it with a six-speed manual transmission (along with the only available eight-speed automatic option in the class2) for a smooth-shifting ride on the highway or parading down city streets.

Fuel economy is as expected given the Genesis Coupe’s snarling specs: 16/24/19 city/highway/combined mpg* with the manual transmission, with an additional mile per gallon on the highway* with the automatic.

Features and Trims

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe offers a trifecta of thrilling trims: base, R-Spec, and Ultimate. Pricing starts at an attractive $26,750 MSRP** for the base model. That includes Proximity Key keyless entry with push-button ignition, heated outside mirrors, automatic climate control, and automatic headlights, foglights, and LED daytime running lights. These features ensure a convenient ride that doesn’t distract from the vehicle’s main purpose.

The interior accoutrements fall along the same lines. Cloth seating comes standard, with leather-wrapping for the steering wheel and shift knob. An Electroluminescent Gauge Cluster with information display screen keeps relevant vehicle data at the fore, while audio technology includes a 170-watt 6-speaker audio system with Bluetooth®, iPod®/USB jacks, and auxiliary input.

Upgrading to the R-Spec trim nets some additional performance upgrades, including suspension tuning, larger wheels with summer tires, larger Brembo® brakes, and a limited-slip rear differential. The interior also gets a sporty makeover with sport seat bolsters and combination leather/cloth trim.

The aptly named Genesis Coupe includes the R-Spec’s additions along with luxury features like a sunroof, rear spoiler, and rear parking sensors. This trim also adds HID xenon headlights with auto-leveling functionality and aero wiper blades on the outside, while the interior gains illuminated door sill plates, leather upholstery, front seat heating and power-sliding for the driver, and a 7-inch touchscreen navigation system with the Blue Link® Telematics System.

Design

The Genesis Coupe boasts an imposing design befitting its performance characteristics, featuring a sharply sculpted front end with blacked-out grille. Hyundai’s signature drop-beltline rear windows look more beautiful than ever here. A chrome-tipped dual exhaust and LED tail lights adorn the rear. The large tuned mufflers and sound generator ensure the engine hits that pitch-perfect note that signifies a great ride to come.

The interior features convenient access for driver and passengers thanks to the walk-in assist features and large door openings. Hyundai engineers also wisely opted for two rear seats as opposed to three to deliver a higher level of comfort. The design accommodates a greater degree of cargo space than you’d expect for a sport coupe of this caliber, offering a full 10 cubic feet to stow your gear.

Audiophiles can upgrade the standard system to a booming 10-speaker, 360-watt Infinity® audio system with external amplifier and HD Radio™ technology.

Safety

Hyundai demonstrates its commitment to safety with standard features including stability and traction control; anti-lock braking; dual-front, side-impact, and side-curtain airbags; and active front head restraints. A comprehensive Rear Parking Assistance System comes standard on the Ultimate.

Bottom Line

Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe is a surprising but rewarding entry for an automaker that’s built its reputation on practical, family-friendly models. Adventurous drivers will find that it delivers on the company’s principles while offering a ride that’s out of the ordinary.
