For the 2019 model year, Hyundai updates its lineup with a modern refresh of one of its most well-known models: the Santa Fe. The automaker will now offer the sharp and compact Santa Fe Sport as the standard Santa Fe, and it will offer a little something extra with the larger three-row Santa Fe XL.

Powertrain

Hyundai offers the 2019 Santa Fe XL in two robust packages: the generous SE and the comprehensive LIMITED Ultimate. Both models include the same robust powertrain: a 3.3-liter Gasoline Direct Injection V6 engine that produces 290 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque.

All 24 valves are controlled by Dual Continuous Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT), which controls intake and exhaust valves using hydraulic pressure. This feature makes micro adjustments dozens of times per second to achieve the most power while maintaining the most efficiency. This beefy engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®, which autonomously adapts to the driver's shifting habits by moving shift points to maximize power and acceleration. It also adapts to the needs of the road by automatically switching to preset shift patterns for specific conditions, such as uphill, inclement weather, or performance driving.

The 2019 Santa Fe XL offers more control over driving characteristics, too. Both trim levels come standard with the now-ubiquitous Drive Mode Selector. With this simple control, drivers can instantly alter multiple performance mechanics to match the needs of the road, providing more power in Sport mode, more efficiency in Eco mode, or somewhere in between in Normal mode. The available All-Wheel Drive also provides more options to adapt to road conditions. This AWD system intelligently sends power to the wheels that can make the best use of it with the most traction. If desired, the driver can also lock the torque-split for a continuous 50/50 power split between the front and rear axles for maximized traction and control. Plus, AWD models offer the available Active Cornering Control, providing better traction and turning in all-weather conditions by transferring engine torque to the rear wheels and applying braking force to the inside rear wheel automatically.

Safety Features

The 2019 Santa Fe XL includes options for the most up-to-date passive and active safety systems on the market today. These laser-guided, computer-controlled features provide the situational awareness a modern driver should expect. For example, the XL offers Dynamic Bending Light Plus, a feature that can autonomously angle the headlights when turning to provide better visibility around the curve. For another example, the XL also offers the innovative Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, a feature that can detect obstacles in the road ahead, like other vehicles or pedestrians, and alert the driver or even take over and stop the vehicle before the driver has time to even notice. Plus, this year’s Santa Fe XL offers a safety first for the Hyundai lineup: Rear Occupant Alert, a new feature that can sense pets or small children in the rear seats. If it senses movement in these seats after the driver leaves and locks the vehicle, it can honk the horn and even send a message to the driver’s smartphone via Hyundai’s Blue Link app. This will help prevent children and pets from being forgotten in cars or from accidentally locking themselves in.

Hyundai Blue Link®

Speaking of Blue Link, when equipped with this feature, drivers will enjoy a three-year complimentary subscription, providing enhanced safety, diagnostic, remote controls, and navigation services. Hyundai’s Blue Link allows drivers to pair their vehicles with their compatible smartphones or even smartwatches. From anywhere in the world, drivers can use the Blue Link app to remotely start the vehicle or lock and unlock the doors. They can use it to remember where they parked their cars or to help the police track them down if stolen. Blue Link also offers enhanced roadside assistance or point-of-interest navigation.

Comfort Features for Everyone

On the inside, the 2019 Santa Fe XL has a wealth of amenities and space. Hyundai offers the XL with three rows of seating in two styles, either the 2nd-row bench seat to sit a total of seven passengers or the 2nd-row with two luxurious captain's chairs to sit a total of six. You'll have the option of YES Essentials® stain-resistant cloth or genuine leather, as well as heated and ventilated seats available in both the front and second rows (don't forget the available heated steering wheel). The available panoramic sunroof floods the entire cabin with natural light, and passengers can plug into any of the four separate standard 12-volt power outlets throughout the cabin in addition to the available USB outlets in the third row or 115-volt outlet in the cargo area. Everyone can appreciate the immaculate sound experience from the available Infinity® premium audio system with Quantum Logic® Surround and Clari-Fi™ Music Restoration Technology, streaming endless playlists via the standard Bluetooth®, Android Auto™, or Apple CarPlay™ connections.
